The tutorial is intended to guide beginners into designing a simple application to track purchase orders. Each part of the tutorial adds one more layer of data and complexity to your application.


  In this self-study you will:

  • Work with  Axway Decision Insight (DI).
  • Create the DI application. 
  • Define the entity model for your application. 
  • Develop and run an integration with sample data from the case study.

Case study

The business case used in this self-study involves Kabels, a specialty cable manufacturer. The business process at Kabels follows orders for cables as they flow through their system. The steps in that flow are:

  • Purchase orders are received. 
  • Purchase orders are validated.
  • The orders are entered into a production scheduler system as Line Requests. 
  • The production line fills the Line Requests and sends the items to shipping. 
  • When the order is complete, logistics arranges for the shipment to be picked up. 
  • The shipping dock notifies accounting to create and send an invoice for the goods. 
  • Accounting then tracks the invoice until payment is received.

For the initial scope of the Decision Insight implementation, this information is all that is required. Now it is time to build the solution. The following pages will guide you through the creation of the first iteration of the Decision Insight.


Make sure you have access to an instance of the product. For information about downloading, installing, and authorizing DI, see Install a node.

For this tutorial, your DI instance should be a dedicated instance. DI is a low-impact application in development situations, so there should not be space or performance considerations in adding an instance to use with the tutorial. 

Note: Because DI is updated nearly every two weeks, there may be a few differences in the way your product behaves as opposed to what is described in this tutorial. This should not prevent you from achieving all the proposed tasks. Also, releases are upwards compatible – you can upgrade to a new release without impacting the application you are going to create.

Access the product

If you are already familiar with DI, then sign in to DI and move on to the rest of the tutorial.

Step Action

Open a browser and navigate to the URL for your DI instance. This will use the path and port you defined, followed by the context root you specified during the installation. Typically, the URL looks like http://localhost:8080/.

To log in, if you do not use the default admin user, you should use a user with the Access Flex application permission and add /app to the end of the URL to access the proper interface (see HTML Guide ).

Finding the Port Number of a Decision Insight Instance


If you do not know the port number used during the installation of your DI instance, you can find it in the platform.properties file. The file is located in installation_directory/conf folder.

Open the file with a text editor and look for a comment line that looks like this one:

# Specify the listening TCP port for HTTP request.

The line directly below the comment specifies the correct port number.

Screen resolution matters

DI is factored for a large display. The admin interface – which you will be using for these guides – requires a display with a minimum resolution of 1440 x 900 to display the images without horizontal scroll bars. If you cannot see a control (icon or button) that is mentioned in the study, check to see if you have a scroll bar at the bottom.

  You should see a screen asking you to Sign in. To sign in to your instance use the credentials have introduced at installation time.


 When you sign in on a blank install, you are asked to create the Application for Decision Insight first. If this is your case, follow the instructions at Create the application.

Otherwise, Decision Insight will open the main display. Look at your display. The left-hand margin will have one of two possible formats.
