Deployment architectures

You can install Decision Insight (DI) as a standalone or as a cluster of nodes. Install the product the way that best suits the needs of your organization to ensure performance and scalability as your volume of data increases. The following describes some deployment concepts.

Types of installations

Tip: A complete installation of DI where DI is up and running is called a deployment.

You can install DI in two different ways:

  • Standalone installation – Installation of the deployment as a single instance of DI deployed on a single node.
  • Clustered installation – Installation of the deployment as a set of clusters. Clusters may have a functional role or a technical role or both.

Important: All nodes within a DI cluster must use the same version of DI.

Nodes and clusters

Node – A node is a server that runs Decision Insight.

Cluster – A cluster is a set of nodes that share the same technical or functional purpose or both.

The following table defines the different types of clusters.

Term Definition
Functional cluster
integration and preprocessing cluster Connects to production systems to extract information.
application cluster Hosts the data monitoring part of the deployment.
cockpit Centralizes and merges information from the other nodes in your implementation.
Technical cluster
active/passive cluster Used for high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) purposes. See High Availability and Disaster Recovery deployment options.
primary/replica cluster

Enables the deployment to handle a large number of concurrent users and calculations. You can use primary/replica clusters for:

  • Functional clusters, for example for the integration cluster. See diagram below.
  • Active/passive clusters. In this case, the active cluster may have one primary node and one or more replica nodes, and the passive cluster may be set up similarly. See the application cluster in the diagram below.
DIMS cluster Enables functional clusters to send data to one another via routes. The Decision Insight Messaging System (DIMS) is a separate component and must be downloaded and installed separately. For more information, see Documentation: Decision Insight Messaging System.
