View time values in the dashboard

In this tutorial, you will learn how to specify the way that time interacts with entities, attributes, and dashboard content. This feature is one of the key features that sets Decision Insight apart. 

1. Navigate into the past

About the time machine

In Decision Insight, the time machine enables you to look at the state of your data at any moment in time, which makes it a powerful tool for detailed data analysis.

The time machine is on the top right side of the screen in a dashboard. 

The date, time, and year indicate the last time the data was refreshed. The calendar icon enables you to navigate through time.

The time machine area indicates that the data is live, that is displaying current information. Click pause to pause time. 

Investigate: Visibility and time

Look at the data in the Order resource. What was the date and time when those purchase orders entered the system? 

Use the time machine to set your dashboard to display information after the first two purchase orders were received. When you are successful, you will see only the first two orders in your dashboard.

 If you know how to do that, skip the next task. Otherwise, follow the procedure below.

Navigate into the past

Use the time machine so your dashboard displays information after the first two purchase orders were received.

Step Action
1 In the context of your dashboard, click the calendar icon on time machine bar. A dialog box is displayed where you can configure Time to Display, Knowledge Time, and Time Tags.

In the Time to Display area, use the calendar to select a date to display the data of your application (for example 1st June), then use the text box to change the time to 14:40.

3 Click Apply. The time on your dashboard changes to June 01, 2016 14:40. Your display shows only two rows of data.

Positioning the time machine changes the current time of the dashboard. The display you see now should match the view you would have if the current time were 20 minutes before 3 pm, June1st.

2. Add time to a dashboard

All the data on your dashboard comes from the Kabels log file resource. Your dashboard lacks any other new information. If you recall, Decision Insight added an instance attribute during the creation of the Order entity. This attribute carries time information about each instance.

Background: Time and date

Five different attribute values are related to the instance metric for entities. Of those five attributes, there are three different types:

  • Duration – a measure of the length of time. 
  • Instant – a static attribute that holds the date and time of an event. 
  • Interval – the elapsed time between two events.

Add a time indicator to a dashboard

Add the Age attribute to your dashboard to know how long it has been since the deployment received each instance of orders. The Age attribute is useful, for example, when you want to evaluate the response time of SLAs for purchase orders.

To add the age attribute to your dashboard, follow these steps.

1 Click either the Home or Access icons on the main menu. The list of available dashboards is displayed.

Click the thumbnail of your Orders search dashboard to access it.

Click the Actions button for the dashboard, then Edit.

4 Move your cursor to the Data pagelet (the bottom pagelet), then click the pencil icon .
5 In the Values area, click the Add value button.The Edit value screen is displayed.
6 The Edit Value screen lets you specify how to display information for a value that you choose. First, click the select an attribute hyperlink. The list of attributes for the Order entity is displayed.

Click the expand arrow icon to the left of the instance attribute.

8 In the list of settings available for the instance attribute, click the Select hyperlink for Age.

Leave the default settings as is, and click Done. The Age attribute is now part of the parameter list for your pagelet and your dashboard now includes time-related information.

Click Done again.

You should see a dashboard with a Search by Criteria pagelet in the top half, and a Selected Files pagelet in the bottom half. The last column of the bottom pagelet is for the Age attribute you've just added, and each row of information has an elapsed time value. If that is what you see, click Save.

A different view: Relating the dashboard content to the case study

Although the information you see in the dashboard is technically correct, it doesn't reflect a real-life business situation. Orders are displayed as being opened, but they are not closed. To modify the dashboard so that it displays more realistic information about the age of purchase orders, move on to the next step in this tutorial.
