Use a time range

1. Configure the pagelet time settings

For the new pagelet to display the orders closed today, you must be able to see data over a time range that goes from a single instant until the current day.

To edit the cloned pagelet, click the pencil icon in the title bar of that pagelet.

2 In the Time range area, select the over interval option. Options which were grayed out in the area become available.
3 In the current drop-down, select the 1 day rhythm option. The time interval for this pagelet becomes the duration of the whole current day, instead of just the current instant in time.
4 To preview how that setting affects your data display, in the left menu of the pop-up, click the DataGrid thumbnail. As you can see, changing the time range setting was not enough to get the desired results.

Explanation: Why the pagelet display did not change

Time in the deployment is a very fluid concept. You can apply time functions to many different areas of the deployment. While you have specified new time settings for the time range of the pagelet, you haven't yet configured a time range on the data itself.

2. Adapt the time range of displayed data

In terms of the data, you still need to configure time, so instead of seeing the data at a given instant, you are seeing it over an extended range of time. 

Configure dimensions

Configure the dimensions involved in your data display.

To leave the pagelet preview mode, on the left menu, click Data.

Currently, you have only one dimension, that is Order, selected as a row. Click Value to configure that dimension.

On the left menu, the dimension entity area enables you to configure which purchase orders are displayed. Click Filter.

4 In the Filter by time or instance(s) area, select the Retrieve occurrences of Order option.

Click the hyperlink on that option line:

6 In the Dimension to correlate with drop-down, make sure that Time Range is selected.
7 On the same line, in the first drop-down, select End during.

The visual hint now indicates which orders will be displayed in the pagelet or not. Click Done.

9 Click Done to leave the Edit dimension page.

For a preview of the pagelet, click the DataGrid.

Understand visual hints

When configuring a time range for some elements, for example, dimensions, Decision Insight can display visual hints to show you which purchase orders are comprised in the time range depending on the options you select.

When you are on the Edit Dimension page, in the Filter by time or instance section, click the that intersect Time Range hyperlink.

With the Retrieve occurrences of Order that option selected, you can see how the visual hint is modified depending on the setting you select. You can retrieve instances that:

  • Begin during the Time Range.
  • End during the  Time  Range .
  • Intersect the  Time  Range .
  • Are included in the  Time  Range .

The visual hint is color-coded as follows:

  • gray rectangle and yellow line: the selected time range.
  • lines: instances of order and how they intersect with the time range.
    • grey line: order is not displayed on your dashboard when you select this time range.
    • blue line: order exists for the selected time range, and is displayed on your dashboard.

The following visual hint displays a configuration where only the orders that End during the time range are selected. For the current dashboard pagelet, this is the selection you want: occurrences of Order that end during the time range.

Background: Dimension to correlate with option on the Edit dimension page

This option defines temporal dimensions with which your data interacts. The Time machine instant option represents the present time.That choice is not what you want in a pagelet where you want to show a day's worth of activity. 

3. Investigate the dashes in the pagelet results

As you may have noticed, the tutorial that you have been following intentionally leads to the wrong results from time to time. These errors are included because one of the most important things to learn – and the hardest to teach – is how to recover from errors. The hope is that you will think "Given these results, what do I need to do to find the right path?"

Decision Insight offers a wide variety of ways to access, filter, display and evaluate information. One of your most significant tasks is validating that you have chosen the correct method and that your results are accurate (and meaningful).

This is an excellent time to investigate why you see dashes instead of data in the pagelet.

Your dashboard should still be in Edit mode. Click the Edit icon for the Purchase orders closed today pagelet.

2 In the Values area, click the rounded rectangle left of CustomerName. The Edit value page is displayed.
3 In the left menu, click Format.
4 In the Elements area, click the line that begins with Value and continues across to say CustomerName of ORDER.
5 In the undefined value representation text box, you should see a dash. To validate that this is the source of the dashes on your display, change the text field to:<Not set>
6 Click Done.

Click the DataGrid icon.

The CustomerName column now displays values saying <Not set>.


Now, you know the reason for the dashes in your display, you still need to investigate why the values for your order are undefined. 

Clue: Attribute value undefined

 

The display of undefined values in the pagelet mean that:

  1. Decision Insight can find the instance of the Order entity. If your filters and selections were not working, all rows in the display would have been empty. The fact that they contain something means that you are on the right track. 
  2. Decision Insight can find the attributes for the Order entity. The column headings are correct. 
  3. Decision Insight cannot find the values of the attributes. 

Decision Insight can see the instances of your Order entity because you changed the filter for your entity to end during the Time Range but you have not changed any of the individual attributes to match that change. The dashboard is currently trying to display information that does not exist at the time you are asking it to look. To fix the problem, change information for your attributes as well.

4. Adjust the time range for the Order dimension attributes

In the previous section, you configured the moment when an order instance would be available. Now you are configuring when the attributes of an order instance are available. 

To adjust the time range for the individual attributes, make sure you are still in the Edit pagelet screen for the Purchase orders closed today pagelet.

On the left menu, click Data.

2 Click the Order dimension. The Edit dimension page is displayed.
3 In the Input Attributes area, you should see a line for the value for the CycleNumber of ORDER. On the same line, a hyperlink is available for the time configuration of that value. click that time configuration hyperlink.

In the Dimension to correlate with drop-down, select Order.

Note: For information about the Dimension to correlate with drop-down, see the note below this table.

In the Retrieve CycleNumber when drop-down, select either one of these two options:

  • the instance of Order ends.
  • the instance of Order last available during Time Range.

6 Click Done, then Done again. You are back to the main pagelet editing page.
7 Click the DataGrid to see that your modification of CycleNumber worked as expected.

In the left menu, click Data.

9 Repeat steps 2-5 to make the same time configuration changes to the other three attributes in the input attributes list.
10 When your pagelet content displays data as expected, click  Done, and then Save to finish editing your dashboard.
