Exercises on time range

Exercise 1

What is the time range? What is the purpose of the Orders Closed Today pagelet? What information about purchase orders that begin today would be available at the start of the time range? What information would be available at the end of the time range? There are answers below.

After you have changed the Dimension to correlate with Order, the drop-down list looks like the picture below:

These options have to be seen in the context of what you configured for the Order entity. In this case what you are configuring is access to one attribute of that entity, CycleNumber.

Here is what you selected for Order. Any selection you make for CycleNumber will have to fall along the time indicated by the two blue horizontal lines:

Time selection for Order

Now compare that diagram with the four choices for retrieving CycleNumber:

Instance of order starts

 Instance of Order ends

Instance of Order is first available during time range

Instance of Irder is last available during time range

The purpose of the part of your dashboard where you are editing is to give information on closed purchase orders – those that have completed their processing. In the choices available, both the visual hints on the right (instance of order ends or instance of order is last available) will work for that purpose.

Exercise 2

If you compare the two diagrams at the bottom, there seems to be an unexpected difference. In the "first available during time range," in the left, the blue marks show that an instance of order will be selected as it crosses into the time range (first available time). In the "last available" on the right, why isn't Order (#5) selected with a blue mark to show selected when the instance crosses out of the time range? Answers below.

You should now be equipped with an understanding of your choices.

Look back at the Time Range Starts for CycleNumber figure: What is the time range?

  • The time range is a current day. The gold-colored line in the diagram represents an entire day.

What is the purpose of the Orders Closed Today pagelet?

  • The purpose is to display orders that close during the time range – the current day.

What information about purchase orders that begin today would be available at the start of the time range?

  • If an order starts processing during the day, there will be no information about that order at the start of the day.

What information would be available at the end of the time range?

  • The answer is slightly confounding. It might be expected that selecting "at end" would work as shown in the Current 1 Day Time Range figure, but it does not. This is a situation where experimenting to see the results is a good idea.

Conclusion: using the time range as an option in this situation would create unexpected results.

Look back at the Instance of Order Selections figure: Why is there an asymmetrical difference between the two? Shouldn't Order (#5) be selected with a blue X at the end of the time range? That would look like this:

The answer? The visual hint in the figure above is incorrect. Your previous time configuration for the Order entity selected only those that end during the time range. Order (#5) ends outside of the time range. You would not have access to the instance of that order at the end of the time range.

Tip

The visual hint section is context-aware. Study them. If something does not appear (or if one of the hint instances is not highlighted) there is a reason.

Keep track, as well, of whether you are working with an entity or an attribute. The options for each are different.

Tip

Your display may appear slightly different from the figure above – the sequence of items may be in a different order. If you want to ensure items are listed in sequence, use the Order selection in the Edit Dimension page (below Filter).

Congratulations, your Purchase Orders Completed Today pagelet is complete.
