Understanding Registration

The diagram below explains:

  • the distinction between the Backend API and the Frontend API
  • how the API management team fits in with the cycle of data between source and end-user
Data: on the left, sources of data are connected by different plugs into the back-end.
Back end - Front end: the back-end API is a basic connection to the data source; the front-end API enforces security rules, and is enriched with added value. The front end can be either:
  • an exact copy of the back-end
  • an extract – a few relevant fields from a large database, for example
  • values modified or combined, using transformation functions
