Manage software updates

This topic explains how to use the Software Update Management page in the Web Administration Interface to check for software updates and apply them to physical and virtual appliances.

The appliance performs periodic automatic checks for software updates. By default, this check is performed on a weekly basis. You can use the Software Update Management page to configure this time interval and where notification e-mails of software update availability are sent. You can also download and install new software updates for the following components:

  • Operating system and Appliance Platform
  • API Gateway software

Updates for each component are managed separately. There is a page for system software updates and bug fixes (for example, for the kernel and other packages installed on the operating system), and a page is for the API Gateway software. You can perform an update for each component independently. For example, this enables you to remain at a specific version of the API Gateway software, but keep the other system packages up to date.

The System Information page in the Web Administration Interface displays the status of the appliance software and indicates if any updates are available. For example:

Manage system software updates

To manage system updates, select Software Update Management in the Web Administration Interface menu on the left, and select System Software Updates. This page displays details on available updates, enables you to check for updates, and enables you to install available updates. For example:

The Check Updates button checks for updates for the system software.

Note   If there is an update for the kernel, you are advised that a reboot is required for the update to take effect.

Install updates

The Update System button enables you to install the available updates and provides an option to automatically reboot after the system updates are complete.

Perform software update

If there was a kernel update, and the system has not been rebooted, this is displayed in the Software Update Status on the System Information page.

Schedule update checks

To change the frequency of the update check mechanism, click the green arrow on the left of Edit Software Update Check Schedule. This displays options for simple (hourly, weekly, monthly) or complex scheduling, and enables you to specify an e-mail address for notifications.

Note   For the system to send notification e-mails, you must enable the postfix service. For details, see Start and stop services, reboot, and shut down.

Manage API Gateway software updates

To manage API Gateway software updates, select Software Update Management in the Web Administration Interface menu on the left, and select API Gateway Updates. This page displays details on available updates, enables you to check for updates, and enables you to install available updates. This page is similar to the System Software Updates page, and displays the current status and a list of available updates.

Check for updates

The Check Updates button enables you to perform an immediate check for API Gateway software updates.

Install updates

The Update Software button displays a list from which to select the API Gateway package to install.
